Filming for Indian Letters took us across some of India’s most iconic and historically rich cities—each adding a unique layer to this powerful documentary journey. We began in the heart of Mughal India—Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Fatehpur Sikri—capturing the stunning skyline of these heritage cities, woven together with a beautiful dance sequence. A big thanks to Firoze Khan, who anchored the production with precision on ground. The journey continued to Kolkata, where we filmed at the deeply symbolic Kidderpore Port (Khidirpur), the departure point for millions of Indian indentured labourers in the 19th century. From here, men and women were shipped to faraway lands like Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad, Fiji, South Africa, and Suriname under what was essentially a system of slavery masked as labour contracts—बंधुआ मज़दूर in Hindi. Thanks to Sandip Roy (Vicky) for handling that crucial segment with care and efficiency. The final leg took us to Varanasi—Banaras—the world’s oldest living city, where we explored the ghats, alleys, and soul of this spiritual capital. It was a joy working with such an incredible team, from the scenic Ganga-facing guest house to long shoot days across temples and timeless streets. Directed by Maia Weschler, shot by Vandita Jain, and produced by Preeti Vasudevan—Indian Letters has been a deeply meaningful experience for all of us at Mumbai Fixers.
