Film City

Christened Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in 2001 (after India's film pioneer), Film City is a sprawling complex built in the 1970s by the Maharashtra government. It was envisioned as a one-stop shop for filmmakers, offering state-of-the-art studios, shooting floors, permanent sets (temples, courts, villages), and diverse landscapes within its 520-acre area. This government initiative aimed to streamline production and provide concessions to the burgeoning Indian film industry.

Mehboob Studios

Steeped in cinematic legacy, Mehboob Studio was founded in 1949 by the legendary director-producer Mehboob Khan. Synonymous with historical epics and socially conscious films, Mehboob Productions (founded 1942) was already a powerhouse when the studio came along. Spread over 20,000 square yards, Mehboob Studio boasts five shooting stages and a rich history. It served as the birthplace of classics like "Mother India" (1957), nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The studios are still operational, offering a captivating blend of heritage and modern facilities, with shooting floors frequently rented for productions.

Filmistan

Pre-dating Film City by a few decades, Filmistan arose in the 1940s as a private studio. It quickly established itself as a powerhouse, launching the careers of legendary actors and churning out countless Bollywood blockbusters. While its operations have scaled down in recent years, Filmistan retains its old-world charm and the iconic studios are still available for rent, offering a glimpse into the golden age of Indian cinema.
